About Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle has been the home of the Percy family, Dukes of Northumberland, for over seven hundred years, and it still is — which is why the season closes in October and why parts of it are shut to visitors. It is one of the largest inhabited castles in England, a mile off the A1 in a market town, and it has spent twenty-five years as one of the most filmed buildings in the country. Here you can see every listed way in, what each fare covers, and how long it leaves you at the castle.

History and the Percys

Seven centuries of one family in one building, from a border stronghold facing the Scots to a Victorian country seat with Italian interiors. Harry Hotspur rode from here; the castle is still named in his stories, and the family that owned it then owns it now. A lived-in castle has a different history from a ruin, and this is it.

Planning your visit

The grounds open at 10am and close at 5pm from late March to 22 October, with last entry at 3:45pm — and the State Rooms shut an hour before the grounds do. Adult admission runs from £19.25 to £24.45 depending on when and how you buy. Most of the coach days here leave that second payment to you.

Things to do inside

The State Rooms and their paintings, the restored Great Kitchen, three museums, two exhibitions, the Artisans Courtyard and Dragon’s Quest for children, Broomstick Training and Have-a-Go Archery on the Bailey. Before you buy

Do you need a guided tour at all?

The honest answer, including the part that costs us money — if you have a car, the castle’s own ticket beats every fare here.

Three different things get called the same name, and it is worth separating them before you spend anything. Alnwick Castle runs talks and tours of its own on site, so an official guided tour there is a different purchase from a coach seat. An Alnwick Castle tour from Edinburgh is mostly eighty miles of the A1 with a second landmark attached. And an Alnwick Castle Harry Potter tour is a day trip with the Outer Bailey in it rather than anything the films licensed. All three are good days out; only one of them puts you through the gate.

You do not need a tour to get in

The castle sells its own admission ticket and it is the cheapest way through the gate by a wide margin. If you have a car, or a night anywhere in Northumberland, buy the ticket and drive: the castle is less than a mile off the A1. Nobody selling a nine-hour coach day has much reason to lead with that.

What a coach day actually buys

Two things worth paying for, and neither is admission. The first is the journey itself — eighty miles each way with somebody else driving and a guide filling the road with border history. The second is the rest of the itinerary: Holy Island, Bamburgh, Rosslyn, Kelso. You are buying Northumberland, with the castle in it.

What no tour can add

Time. The castle recommends two to three hours and the coach days give you between ninety minutes and three, because they have eighty miles to drive back. If the State Rooms and the museums are the reason you are coming, the ticket and your own wheels beat every fare listed here, and it is worth saying so plainly.

Only a couple of the listings here include that cost: the castle’s own ticket, and the small-group coach day when you select its package option. On the rest the gate is a second payment, and it is worth having the number in your head before you go.

Getting there

Alnwick sits less than a mile off the A1, thirty-five miles north of Newcastle and eighty south of Edinburgh, and there is parking on site. There is no station in Alnwick itself — the East Coast line stops at Alnmouth, about three and a half miles away, and a taxi or the local bus covers the rest. Almost every listed day trip runs from Edinburgh; none departs Newcastle or London, which surprises people given the distances.

How long you need

The castle asks for at least two to three hours, and that is the number to hold the tours against. The longest give you three hours, most give two or two and a half, and the shortest gives ninety minutes; the entry ticket gives you the day. Watch the second deadline as well as the first: the grounds take last entry at 3:45pm, but the State Rooms stop at 4pm and close at half past.

With children

The castle does most of the work — the Artisans Courtyard, Dragon’s Quest, Have-a-Go Archery and Broomstick Training are all in the ticket, and under-5s go free. The obstacle is the journey rather than the castle: minimum ages across the listed coach days run 4, 5, 7 and 12, so a tour may rule your family out before the castle does.
